History of Dinagyang

Dinagyang began after Rev. Fr. Ambrosio Galindez, the first Filipino Rector of the Agustinian Community and Parish Priest of the San Jose Parish introduced the devotion to Santo Niño in November 1967 after observing the Ati-Atihan Festival in the province of Aklan. On 1968, a replica of the original image of the Santo Niño de Cebu was brought to Iloilo by Fr. Sulpicio Enderez of Cebu as a gift to the Parish of San Jose. The faithful, led by members of Confradia del Santo Niño de Cebu, Iloilo Chapter, worked to give the image a fitting reception starting at the Iloilo Airport and parading down the streets of Iloilo.

In the beginning, the observance of the feast was confined to the parish. The Confradia patterned the celebration on the Ati-atihan of Ibajay, Aklan, where natives dance in the streets, their bodies covered with soot and ashes, to simulate the Atis dancing to celebrate the sale of Panay. It was these tribal groups who were the prototype of the present festival.

A participant of Dinagyang Festival

In 1977, the Marcos government ordered the various regions of the Philippines to come up with festivals or celebrations that could boost tourism and development. The City of Iloilo readily identified the Iloilo Ati-atihan as its project. At the same time the local parish could no longer handle the growing challenges of the festival.

Dinagyang was voted as the best Tourism Event for 2006, 2007 and 2008 by the Association of Tourism Officers in the Philippines. It is one of few festivals in the world to get the support of the United Nations for the promotion of the Millennium Development Goals, and cited by the Asian Development Bank as Best Practice on government, private sector & NGO cooperatives.

WHAT TO EAT

1. Batchoy

28121026980_1a31753070_b.jpg

A serving of egg noodles called miki, topped with generous amounts of fried garlic, crushed chicharon (crispy fried pork skin), scallions, slivers of pork meat, intestines, and liver, and for the finishing touch–a spoonful of bone marrow.

2. TATOY’S NATIVE LECHON MANOK

24368629090_7b1d1dd629_b.jpg

Tatoy’s and Breakthrough are probably the most popular restaurants in Iloilo. But when at Tatoy’s, one must order their famed lechon manok.

The charcoal-roasted native chicken called “daraag” is marinated in vinegar and calamansi then stuffed with lemongrass and sampalok leaves.

It’s crisped to a golden brown, with a very flavorful and slightly sour taste from the marinade. Native chicken is known to have a gamey taste and stringy texture because it’s leaner with less fat.

3. Talaba

27764540874_e0c790425d_b

The oysters are cooked parboiled/steamed to make them easier to open. Good quality oysters have a fresh taste and smell and are very fat and succulent.

Ilonggos prefer to pair these with the iconic spicy vinegar “sinamak” that’s sometimes mixed with soy sauce and calamansi.

Besides the vinegar, our friend Renzo told us to drink soft drinks to minimize the chance of an upset stomach.

4. Pancit Molo

28302287201_2aab8f49c1_b.jpg

Pancit Molo is a soup dish made of meat-filled dumplings, with shredded chicken, and a very savory thick broth.

It originated from the town of Molo in the province of Iloilo, influenced by the wanton soups brought in by the community of Chinese settlers in the area.

5. breakthrough fresh seafood

Breakthrough Seafood Restaurant offers fresh catch from the sea just like Tatoy’s.

The Managat fish (also known as red snapper or mangrove jack), however, they culture on their own. It’s only taken out when ordered, then butterflied and grilled inasal style.

Imbao, a large, fatty type of clam is a pride of the Visayan region and best eaten raw. It has a jelly-like texture.

If you’re lucky, you can also eat the seasonal angel-wing shaped diwal from Capiz! They have a similar taste to mussels and the texture of fresh oyster, giving it a distinct flavor. They are usually baked, steamed, or grilled and topped with fresh garlic.

CHURCHES

images

JARO CATHEDRAL

Jaro Cathedral is the most familiar one to me on this list. Every time we visit Iloilo, we would pass by this church as it’s the closest one to home.

images (1)

The unique thing about Jaro Cathedral is the location of its belfry or the bell tower. While most churches will have its belfry right next to the fundamental architecture, Jaro Cathedral’s is on the opposite side of the street.

4.jpgThe stairs at the front of the church lead to the shrine of Our Lady of Candles (Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria) and give you a better view of the bell tower. The Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is the only female image among all the male images in the church.

Miagao Church edited.jpg

MIAG AO CHURCH

Miag-ao Church is famous for the painstakingly detailed sculptural relief on its pediment. The church was built in 1731, and it is considered one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The Miag-ao church is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The style of the church is considered Baroque Romanesque. Most notable is its two different bell towers, which served as a watchtower to defend the town against the Moro invasion. It is a common misconception though that its massive structure was for military purposes. The truth is, the structure is built in such a way to withstand movement and earthquakes.

SAN JOAQUIN CHURCH

San Joaquin is the southernmost town of Iloilo, so a trip to this church will cost you some time. It’s well worth the trip though. The pediment features the victory of the Spanish over the Moors in Battle of Tétouan. The attention to detail is remarkable. The materials and dyes used for the church’s body and its pediment are all derived from nature.

Considered a National Cultural Treasure, any plans for restoration to the church must be made known to the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP). However, the most recent renovation left the NMP highly criticized as it deteriorated just after a few months.

ST. ANNE CHURCH MOLO

Molo Church is known to be a feminist church or Church of the Women because the images of the saints in the church are all female.

Built in 1831, the church is built out of white coral rock and has been well-preserved since. It was declared a national landmark by the National Historical Institute in 1992.

Across the church, at the Molo plaza, is a structure featuring Greek gods and goddesses. There isn’t a concrete story as to why these were built and placed here.

All about me

42710873_2266243783390159_2166761346715090944_n

Hi! let me introduce myself. I’m Gyka Grace Luhan.  I’m a Hotel and Restaurant Management Student of ABE International Business College Iloilo city.

I live in no permanent house here in Iloilo city but I was born in Jordan, Guimaras which my childhood home is in New Poblacion, Buenavista Guimaras. My parent names are Rosemarie Machan and Gerardo Luhan.

I’m already 27 yrs of age just last August 4.  This is my second course from the first one of Professional caregiver. I have 2 siblings names are Nikko Jase Tadena ( the ECE) and Gerard Nathaniel Luhan (the Tourism).

Childhood

when I was 5 yrs. I was admitted in the hospital diagnose of stage 3 dengue fever. its not everybody want but for instances we know God has plan to everything. I survive my trial and given me a second chance.

Im very quite person, shy  and doesn’t have many friends. every afternoon our grandparents let us sleep but we tend to run over it. I only have one cousin that is always there for me but recently its change so fast.

In my grade 5, i was chosen to be one of the majorettes in school. Ow! but because of my sickness. My parents decided to transfer me and my little brother in Immaculate Conception School in Oton. It was a short time to say good bye to our old house but its a worth to try.  In those days in school I was sometimes bulled and still no close friends.

In my grade 6, my interest come over to arts and adventure so i join Girls Scout. I was indeed excited and been allowed to join the troop tour to one of the scouts area here in Iloilo. I experience fan, teamwork and leadership.

Teenage

During this time, I was transferred to Sagrado from grade 6 to my 4th yr high school.I joined so many workshop in school, events and programs that suites my wants but only one thing for sure that not good. PUBLIC SPEAKING!! This kind of work activity that i tend to break down, cry and sometimes i cant speak even I know what i need to say. I pity myself to the core but this days are over.I have so many crushes in school but only crush. Too afraid to say hey! hi!…

The library is my best place to study, read books, write poem and draw my emotion. those years of mine is life a fragile thing that is broken. My aunts is trying to compare all the things I do to my cousin. That cousin is my best-friend because she is smart and can do anything that is ask to her. And me the clumsy child that doesn’t know anything in the world.

I grow up that my mom and dad is fighting every time they talk. One time my mom decided to work abroad to the need of financial support. I feel more terrible and sad in my 3rd HS yrs. no more Mom to call and did taking care of us.

It never bother me not to finished my high school. It was indeed sad to feel that my classmate has their mom with them in there special days but i understand also my mother part.

High School give me a GOOSEBUMPS

 Young Adult

Yes! college life! Im getting old! to my mind only.

This chapter of my life that my love life, career and future is in my very hands. I enrolled to University of San Agustine as a nurse. I take all the examinations and physical test and I PASS!  I work my head off even this course was never my wants but time will give a signs. I shift course and school to St. Augustine School of nursing as Professional Caregiver i finished and graduate this course.

All my life “but” is my tail. as I said in my teenage yrs, im a rebelion! more and more at this time. Never been good to my studies, more break ups are come and go, Im looking and searching. No where to go. One long relationship ended and become miserable.

To my mom expenses. she send me to another country.  In Dubai to the purpose i need a new environment to grown and develop what i have and what more can i be. this plan of theirs work perfectly. I become a person that have focus but still sad. I applied work and as like a blink of an eye i was hired.

Dubai is place of temptation. what more you can say? just be strong and hold on if you have.

Adulting

come to think of finishing my study and get a job!

ONLY I CAN CHANGE MY LIFE. NO ONE CAN DO IT FOR ME.!

  1.  Tribu Salognon – this tribe is from Jaro National High School. The name was derived from the term “Salog” which was Jaro’s old name. It was changed to “Ang Taga-Jaro” for several years until it was reverted to Salognon in 2009 up to the present. Tribu Salognon continues the legacy as the back to back champion of Dinagyang Ati Tribe Competition or 2016 and 2017.

2. Tribu Paghidaet- this tribe is from Lapaz National High School.  The tribe’s name is still adopted because of Lapazenians are devoted to Sr. Sto Nino and with the intercession of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, they believed that it shall be blessed with beautiful performances in the prestigious competition.

3. 4. Tribu Dagatnon– this tribe is from Ramon Avanceña National High School. The newest tribe represents Ramon Avanceña National High School (RANHS). It’s been ten years since RANHS first took part in the world-renowned Dinagyang Festival in 1998 as being “Tribu Sigabong.” This means the noise of firecrackers as well as pyrotechnics where the district of Arevalo (Villa) is well-known. Throughout the years, Dinagyang Festival has become a unifying component for the public/private partnership to function together towards a common goal. It’s in the same line of thinking that Ramon Avancena National High School is joining again in this deserving event with the name “Tribu Dagatnon.”
